Today it’s easier to work as a digital nomad than ever before, thanks to the growth of the internet and the number of online jobs that are available.
Equally noteworthy is the fact that there are a variety of ways to live the digital nomad lifestyle as well, whether it be traveling from one country to the next, touring the United States in an RV, or just sticking to libraries and coffee shops in your area.
But regardless of how you choose to live the lifestyle as a digital nomad, there are a variety of things that you must absolutely need to make it happen.
Here are five things that you absolutely need to live the digital nomad lifestyle:
1 – A Laptop
A little obvious? Maybe, but still, it’s worth noting. You simply have to have a laptop to work as a digital nomad these days, or otherwise, a large and highly functional tablet.
There’s a reason that the term ‘laptop lifestyle’ exists. Working as a digital nomad really means that you’re working from your laptop wherever you go. And not only will you need a laptop, but you’re going to need a backpack or messenger bag of some kind to carry it around in as well.
2 – A Phone
Perhaps this is another highly obvious item, but it’s still absolutely something that every digital nomad needs to be successful: a smart phone.
There’s a variety of work that you’ll be able to get done from your phone, including researching information, making financial transactions, and sending emails. There a whole number of useful travel apps that you can download to. You can also use your phone as a personal hotspot for yourself too. Speaking of which, something else you’ll need is…
3 – A Personal Wi-Fi Router
Now here’s an item that many novice digital nomads will oftentimes overlook: a personal wi-fi router that you carry around with you as well.
In the age we live in, Wi-Fi access is more common and available than ever. From public parks to restaurants to libraries to coffee shops to restaurants to hotels, we can really access Wi-Fi access whenever we need it.
Nonetheless, this doesn’t at all guarantee that you’ll always have access to Wi-Fi when you need it. It also doesn’t guarantee that when you do find Wi-Fi that the connection will be fast or reliable.
In order to be truly productive as a digital nomad, you need to ensure that you always have access to fast and speedy internet when you need it, and that’s why you need to always bring a Wi-Fi router of your own as a backup option.
4 – Somewhere Comfortable To Work
Something else you’re going to need is a comfortable place to get work done. Take note that sitting at a coffee shop or with a computer on your lap while sitting on a sofa does not necessarily equate ‘comfortable.’
In other words, what you really need is a true dedicated workspace. This can be difficult when you’re traveling all the time and are away from an office desk like you would have at home, but it can be done.
For instance, if you’re traveling in an RV, you can modify the inside of the RV to have a work desk and office. If you’re traveling from one hotel to the other, most hotels will have a desk where you can park yourself to focus on just getting work done.
5 – Discipline
What’s the last but arguably most important thing you need to succeed as a digital nomad? Discipline.
Traveling from place to another is always fun and exciting. Still, you have to force yourself to sit down and complete your tasks and goals for the day. This doesn’t mean that you have to dedicate one hundred percent of your time to getting work done without having any fun whatsoever, but it does mean that you really need to get your priorities straight to maximize productivity.
The best way to approach this is to ask yourself at what times in the day you’re at your most productive. Maybe you’re at your most productive in the morning, and then at noon or a certain time in the afternoon, you can step away from your computer and go enjoy yourself exploring the area you’re at.
